We believe having a vibrant, personal relationship with God is what we were made for. Spending time in the Word, talking with God, being totally devoted to God and seeing everything in our lives through our relationship with Him.
Real Community
We were made for relationships! We believe in living out deep, intentional relationships with our brothers and sisters in Christ. We find this best takes place in what we call Core Groups!
Real Responsibility
We believe every Christian has an outward responsibility and should do their part in global missions, relational evangelism and justice. In Chi Alpha, we provide students ways to serve in these ways.
Staff
Hunter and Julia Johnson
Hunter graduated from the University of Virginia in 2018 with a degree in Religious Studies. His life was transformed throughout his time in Chi Alpha. In this time, God called him to campus ministry. He and Julia met in their hometown of Roanoke, and married in July 2018. Hunter then did an internship with Chi Alpha at UVA, and during this time, Julia grew a passion and desire for campus ministry as she served alongside him. In the Summer of 2019, Hunter and Julia moved to Harrisonburg to help start Chi Alpha at JMU. Hunter loves the outdoors, sports, and dad jokes. Julia enjoys road trips, hiking, and Starbucks.

Sam and Hannah VanTAsel
Hannah and Sam met while students in Chi Alpha at JMU (graduating in ‘23 (Hannah) and ‘22 (Sam). They got married July 2024 and are now serving with JMU Chi Alpha! Sam is going into his second year on staff and Hannah just finished her internship and is heading into her first year on staff. Their desire is to see students’ lives transformed in knowing and experiencing Jesus’s love for us. Sam and Hannah love the outdoors and enjoy going on adventures together!

Marina Clarke
Marina Clarke grew up in Staunton, Virginia and graduated from James Madison University in 2023 with a degree in Cultural Communication & a minor in Biology. Marina joined Chi Alpha in Fall of 2019 during her freshman year of college as it was being pioneered & has been involved ever since! She completed the CMIT program with JMU Chi Alpha and is now on staff. Marina has experienced the overflowing joy and peace of the Lord through her time in Chi Alpha as a student and now longs to see students be forever changed by His power and love through Chi Alpha! In her free time, Marina enjoys singing, drinking coffee and exploring new places.

Evie Smith
Evie Smith grew up in Staunton, Virginia and graduated from James Madison University in 2023 with a degree in Hospitality Management. Evie joined Chi Alpha at JMU during her freshman year in 2019 as it was being pioneered. Her life was radically transformed through discipleship and Christ-centered friendships in Chi Alpha & because of this tremendous investment, Evie now serves on staff here at JMU! Evie is passionate about seeing students’ lives changed through genuine encounters with the Lord and strives to love others like Jesus! Evie enjoys reading, playing the piano, and singing with the car windows down.
